Selling Services as Products
Service products let you sell your skills and time through your online store — a 1-hour consultation, a home repair visit, a tutoring session, a haircut. The customer pays online, and you deliver the service in person. No stock, no shipping, no download link.
1. What is a service product?
A service product represents something you do rather than something you ship or send. Think: a consultation call, a hair appointment, a repair job, a photography session, a class, or a cleaning service. When someone buys a service product, they're paying to book your time — you coordinate the specifics (date, location, details) with them directly after the order.
Service products differ from the online bookings system (which lets customers self-schedule a slot from a calendar). With service products, the customer simply pays upfront and you follow up to arrange the when and where.
2. Creating a service product
Go to Products and click to add a new product. Set the Type to Service. Stock and shipping fields won't appear — services don't run out and don't get delivered in a box. Fill in:
- Name — what the customer sees, e.g. "60-min Photography Session" or "Home Plumbing Repair"
- Description — what's included, what to expect, any requirements
- Price — the amount they pay at checkout (USD, LBP, or both)
- Image — a photo that represents the service on your store
- Category — assign it to a category so it appears in the right section
3. How service products appear in your store
Service products show in your online store exactly like physical products — same card layout, same image, name, and price. Customers add them to the cart and check out as normal. There's no checkout difference: they fill in their name, phone, and complete the order. You then contact them to arrange the service.
If you want to group all your services in one place, create a "Services" category and assign all service products to it so it's easy for customers to find.
4. Handling service orders
When a service order comes in, you'll see it in Orders with the customer's name and contact details. Reach out by phone or WhatsApp to confirm the date, time, and any details. Once the service is delivered, mark the order as complete.
Since there's nothing to ship, you can skip the fulfillment steps that apply to physical products. The order is essentially a paid booking confirmation — treat it as such.
5. Service products vs the bookings system
YellowPOS has two ways to sell services:
- Service products — customer pays upfront via the store checkout, you follow up to schedule. Best for services where timing is flexible or needs to be coordinated (e.g. home repairs, custom sessions).
- Online bookings — customer self-schedules from a live calendar of your available slots. Best for recurring appointments with fixed durations (e.g. salon, clinic, spa). See the Online Bookings guide for setup details.
You can use both at the same time — service products in your store for open-ended services, and the booking page for time-slot-based ones.
